FAQs About Chiropractic Care

chiropractic care

Doctors of chiropractic can treat patients of all ages—from babies to senior citizens. Although they are best known for providing rapid back pain relief, chiropractors can help patients with many different symptoms arising from conditions of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems.

Besides back pain, which conditions can chiropractors treat?

Chiropractors can’t treat every medical condition, of course, but you might be surprised at the diverse range of medical problems that do respond well to chiropractic care. They include:

  • Fibromyalgia
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Tenosynovitis
  • Tennis elbow
  • Piriformis syndrome
  • Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis

I have leg pain. Why does my chiropractor want to adjust my back?

There are many symptoms felt elsewhere in the body that actually begins in the back. For example, sciatica originates in the lower back but causes pain down the leg. Even headaches can originate in the cervical region of the spine, which is the neck area. This is why your chiropractor may perform manual therapies to the back, even if your symptoms are referred elsewhere in the body.

What happens after a chiropractic adjustment?

The benefits of proper joint alignment are numerous. Adjustments restore the transfer of nerve impulses, which allows the patient’s body to function as it should. Every individual has a unique experience after chiropractic adjustments. You will likely feel immediate relief of your pain. You may notice that your muscle tension subsides. Some people report better sleep, a reduction in stress, and an overall feeling of health and vitality. Some chiropractic patients may feel some tingling sensations, which is temporary.

Will I have to keep coming back every week?

One of the most common myths about chiropractic care is that it’s “addictive.” Many people feel so much better after getting an adjustment that they do decide to continue returning for maintenance care. Occasional maintenance visits with a doctor of chiropractic are similar to regular wellness exams with a family medicine doctor. Usually, patients have more frequent appointments initially, as they recover. Once you’re healed and rehabbed, you may decide to continue with maintenance care if you wish.
