What is Sports Medicine

Sports medicine is a branch of medicine that deals with physical fitness and the treatment and prevention of injuries related to sports and exercise. Sport medicine doctors are specialists who have completed medical school and residency training in physical medicine and rehabilitation, family practice, or orthopedic surgery. Our sports medicine specialists here at The Houston Spine and Rehabilitation Center have extensive education in musculoskeletal medicine and use this to treat athletes and other physically active individuals. More specifically, we are experts in treating injuries to muscles, ligaments, tendons, and bones.

Often we will also be called on to treat chronic illnesses that can affect physical performance such as neck and back pain. Sports medicine doctors also advise on managing and preventing injuries. Our goal as specialists is to deliver clinical physical activity interventions and treatments to negate the burden of disease directly attributable to physical inactivity, incorrect activity, or overactivity. You can learn more about our many sports medicine treatments below.

Our Approach to Sports Medicine

No two athletes are ever identical, and no two injuries or conditions are ever exactly the same. For these reasons alone, our sports medicine specialists here at The Houston Spine and Rehabilitation Center build our treatment programs around the individual needs of each and every patient we see. When you meet with our team, one of our sports medicine physicians will perform a comprehensive physical exam to assess the extent of your condition or injury. If treatment is needed outside of our office, we will recommend a medical facility in the region.

For most patients, we build a preventative regimen designed to promote healing and build strength and mobility over time. Once the injury has healed, we often put patients on specialized physical therapy programs for continued growth in the areas of strength and flexibility. To mitigate symptoms of pain and immobility, we also prescribe anti-infl
