Debunking Common About Physical Therapy Myths

Big white question mark with chalk

Physical therapy is a safe and reliable treatment that people of all ages can rely on to overcome pain and mobility issues. However, myths about physical therapy prevent many people from seeking care when they could benefit from it. Don’t let these common misconceptions about physical therapy keep you from getting the relief you need.

Myth: I can only see a physical therapist if I have an injury

You don’t have to wait until you experience an injury to see a physical therapist. In fact, undergoing physical therapy can help you build muscle strength and correct body mechanic issues before they turn into injuries that impact your mobility. Many athletes make physical therapy a regular part of their conditioning routines for this reason. Preventing injuries is as much a part of physical therapy as treating them.

Myth: Physical therapy will hurt

The point of physical therapy is to alleviate pain, not cause it. When you undergo physical therapy, your provider will work closely with you to ensure all of the movements you do are therapeutic and within your comfort level. If you experience pain during physical therapy, speak up. Your therapist will modify the activities you are doing so that they do not cause you any discomfort. Undergoing therapy should help you reduce the impact of all kinds of pain, including chronic pain.

Myth: My physician has to refer me to a physical therapist

Although you should check your insurance policy for rules that may apply to you, many people attend physical therapy without a referral from a physician. Your physical therapist can evaluate your symptoms and come up with a treatment plan that is right for you in the absence of requests from your doctor. Keep in mind that there may be restrictions on some of the kinds of physical therapy that can be provided without a referral, depending on the state laws where you live and your insurance policy’s requirements.
