Highlighting the Common Causes of Back Pain

Did you know that back pain is among the most common causes of lost productivity, disability, and doctor’s visits? You can obtain temporary back pain relief by using over-the-counter pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs. However, these medications won’t address the root of the problem. To identify the source of your back pain and receive a personalized treatment plan, you’ll need the help of a chiropractor or other orthopedic expert.

Using Poor Posture While Lifting and Carrying

Improper lifting and carrying techniques are some of the most common reasons for acute back pain. Remember that your spine is a delicate, complex structure; lifting even a moderately heavy object inappropriately can place excessive stress on it. Squat down, rather than bending, and lift the object using the strength of your legs instead of your back muscles. Hold the object close to your body. If you need to change direction to carry the object, avoid twisting or pivoting your back. Instead, turn your whole body. If the object is more than 20 percent of your body weight, try to have someone else help you lift it.

Sitting for Prolonged Periods of Time

Sitting might not seem like a major health problem. But in fact, chiropractors often work with patients who develop back pain because of sedentary lifestyles. The intervertebral discs that cushion the vertebrae rely on movement for the proper circulation of the fluids that carry nutrients. If you sit still for long periods of time, your discs aren’t receiving the nutrients they need. Whenever possible, stand up and stretch or walk around at least once per hour. Remember to use proper posture while you’re seated.

Being a “Weekend Warrior”

Leading a sedentary lifestyle can harm your back in other ways. If you’re relatively inactive during the week and active during the weekend, your body may not have the physical conditioning necessary to handle the occasional activity. Try to fit in regular stretching and exercises during the week to reduce your risk of injuries.
