Understanding Scoliosis

Skeletal representation of a scoliosis

Understanding Scoliosis, is a spinal deformity that causes the spine to deviate from a straight vertical structure; a spine suffering from scoliosis is curved sideways, creating a c- or s-shaped curve in the back. This condition affects up to three percent of Americans and is a common cause of back and neck pain. Your chiropractor can help you better understand scoliosis and its effects on your daily life, as well as your options for scoliosis treatment for pain relief.

Scoliosis Causes

Scoliosis is most often a congenital condition that progresses from birth; however, scoliosis can also be caused by neuromuscular conditions or even injuries and degenerative bone conditions, such as osteoporosis. In the vast majority of scoliosis cases, no discernible cause is present—this is called idiopathic scoliosis.

Scoliosis Symptoms

The symptoms of scoliosis vary, depending on the curvature of the spine that results. In most cases, scoliosis can be seen during a physical examination, as spinal curvature causes the shoulders and hips to fall out of proper alignment. Scoliosis can also cause some types of neck, back, and leg pain, as well as difficulty breathing or other chronic conditions in extreme cases. Digital X-rays can be used to visualize the curvature of the spine for an accurate diagnosis.

Scoliosis Treatment

Treatment of scoliosis depends on the severity of the spinal curvature and the symptoms it causes. In mild cases of scoliosis, no treatment may be necessary; more significant spinal curvature, however, is often associated with back pain and other physiological complications and may be treated using methods that include physical therapy, bracing, and even spine surgery to restore the natural shape of the spine.
