What to Expect at Your First Chiropractic Appointment

What to Expect at Your First Chiropractic Appointment

Many people visit chiropractors for the first time chiropractic appointment after developing back or neck pain. However, it’s important to note that a doctor of chiropractic can actually treat a wide range of orthopedic health problems and provide preventive wellness services. The first visit to a chiropractor’s clinic is similar to an appointment with any other healthcare provider. However, you’ll likely find that a chiropractor typically devotes more time to each patient and emphasizes the importance of patient education.

Interview

Your first appointment with a chiropractor will focus on gathering information about you and your medical issues. Expect to answer questions about your medical history. The chiropractor will also need to know specific details about your current health issue, such as when you began experiencing pain, where the pain is located, and how you would describe the pain. Let your chiropractor know if the pain developed after an injury and whether there are any activities that either worsen or improve the pain.

Clinical Exam

The chiropractor will conduct a clinical exam, which may include checking your blood pressure, respiration, and pulse. He or she will test your range of motion, muscle strength, muscle tone, and neurological wellness.

Diagnostic Tests

In some cases, diagnostic studies can be helpful. The chiropractor may ask that you undergo X-rays, which reveal images of your bones. Occasionally, patients may be referred for laboratory tests or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans.

Patient Education

After reaching a diagnosis, the chiropractor will discuss your condition with you. He or she will develop a personalized treatment plan, which may include chiropractic adjustments, massage therapy, physical therapy, and other treatment modalities. Be sure to ask any questions you may have about the recommended treatment, such as how long your anticipated recovery may be. If you agree with the treatment recommendations, you may begin rehabilitation before leaving the office.
